CD Review – Crossfire – “Dirty Games”

by skazm // March 1st, 2008
Jew CD Review

Oh, my my my. The hairspray lies thick in the air tonight. With the first few chords of “Heartbreaker” I could already feel the ozone layer cowering in fear. Crossfire is a typical glam act of notable quality. If these guys would have been around in the 80’s they would have for sure been on the Billboard charts. Rikki Reckless (heheheh his real name is um, slightly more Israeli than that, I’m sure) has a voice reminiscent of Kip WInger/the dude from Britney Fox…that boy must be wearing some pretty tight jeans in the studio, yo, cause he can hit excruciatingly high notes. Anyway, flamboyant guitar expertise that blows away most glam bands, those glammy kinda keyboards, and token ballad (All I Need), lyrical content and..whatever, everything you ever heard out of an 80’s glam band is available here but you couldn’t pick out a specific band and say “This is who they sound like.” Avi Diamond (Orphaned Land) laid down the drum tracks on this disc. And the recording production is basically impeccable. You can tell they put money into this.

When listening to “Never Give It Up” I can’t help but feel cynical as to the chances of their success in the music environment today. But hey, Cinderella, Poison, Warrant, all of those guys are still playing high-selling national arena tours in the States (albeit with more than two bands on one bill) so who knows?

Weird Chicken – Pecking the Hens at the Old Friend (or something)….

While sitting at soundcheck the Mens Rea performance at the Old Friend Rock Bar in Jerusalem 1.3.08, who do I see clucking around the bar but Weird Chicken.

Zach’s into home gardening right now.
Tanny’s doing interpretive dancing.
Shani is into politics and auto-erotic asphyxiation.
Aviad is into being pregnant.

Tanny speaking for the band: we all remind you to CREATE YOUR OWN ENTERTAINMENT! (and get out of the house.. nothing good will come of it..)

Zach being a yo-yo: “It’s never been about the girls, or the drugs really. It’s about us being unloved and our frustration with how meaningless life is. I mean everyone dies. Everyone! How can anyone accept death??? It’s crazy!!! Death should not be accepted, it should be battled like the very enemy that is our vice!”

In any case, things haven’t changed except that Weird Chicken is now working on a new album, and no shows are planned until the album is out.

“Next time we play these places, people will know it.” – Tanny

Be warned. Contents include:

Politics. Religion. Peter Steele needing to get his head out of his ass. Missionaries. Type O Negative being Nazis. The problem with Americans. The problem with American Jewry. The downfall of the music industry. Rock stars with day jobs. Fuggetaboutit. And there are links to Israeli bands interspliced within the article… if you don’t want to read the Jew stuff scroll down to the middle.

Almana Schora 07.02.08 @ the Kultura in Tel Aviv – Review and Pics

by skazm // February 17th, 2008
Mischief, Show Review

OK…as someone born in the States and used to an Israeli metal scene that basically isn’t anything Israeli or Jewish, I gotta say, Almana Schora (Black Widow in Hebrew) was a mechaye. Between the Breslovs blowing some huge honking shofars, their ten plagues song (that ended in makat bachurot vs. bechorot (bachurot meaning girls) and the lead singer have everyone raise hands and yell “SHMA YISRAEL H ELOKENU H EHAD” it was definitely something to take note of. Bassist Yagel Cohen has a tattoo of Eretz Yisrael on his bicep, and the rest of his band were dressed in regular black metalhead clothes albeit embossed with silver magenei david, and as for the actual music, it was edgy rock and roll, Pink Floyd influenced, and I never saw such a heavy acoustic set in my life as well. I’m impressed. Check them out at http://myspace.com/almanaschora.
