Gogol Bordello – Wonderlust King – 29.12.09

This show was the best of the best – I am now completely gagging for Gogol Bordello’s new album, which comes out in April.

IMPROMPTU REVIEW:

Dillinger Escape Plan was never my cup of tea, even when Mike Patton was on board. And Gil Sharone left the band about a year ago so either way I didn’t have much reason to look forward to them – I hate high screamo vocals, but the aural onslaught of technical prowess the DEP is famous for was appreciated despite. I hate jazz, I hate odd time music, and a lot of their stuff is built on that, but when I could actually understand their musical language I dug it. They are who they are and they’re supremely talented, but they’re an acquired taste. Gogol Bordello vocalist Eugene Hutz came out for an impromptu punk jam of a song I didn’t know, and the band stated they’d never practiced it before, but it was a nice apertif for the sonic banquet to come…

I was standing by the sound booth with my friend, so I got a glimpse of the setlist. I knew what I was in for – but I was so happily surprised by the finale, a superb medley that wove snippets from the older GB songs together including one of my favorites, “My Strange Uncles From Abroad” – but before the finale, the long, drawn-out debacle of awesomeness perpetrated by renegade gypsy hands, I should describe the rest of the show I guess.

Later though – I’m going to bed.

  1. Last show of their six-month tour – hey, if you don’t like the quality, buy me a frikkin’ camera or shut yer pie holes…
