Man, I’d be at the May 8 show right now if I hadn’t had some strife…lost $50 too because of it. Aaaanyway….

Read the review….

Just let it be known, that for some weird reason you weren’t supposed to take pictures unless you had a photo pass. Of course, I ignored that directive. But I had to keep it on the downlow because the security guards were being strict about it. Otherwise, I would have taken better pictures.

Judging from Type O Negative webmaster Steve Prue’s massive camera action, there will be better pics to see without people’s heads, security guards and the like on typeonegative.net. It’s kind of cool that I’ve interviewed someone from every band on this bill. Do a search in the main page…

First up were Syracuse redneck rockers Brand New Sin. Guitarist Kenny Dunham’s vest was ablaze with patches like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Ozzy which was a portent of what they were playing. The band stays true to classic metal and is straight up rock and roll. Once upon a time, people still had musical taste and this was the kind of stuff on the radio. To risk cliche, it’s like a Harley Davidson hog kinda movie soundtrack waiting to happen. Vocalist Joe Altier knows how to bellow his heart out with a whisky tinge and it’s a shame that they didn’t play “Broken Soul.”

Then it was “time for New York to scream like the dead” in the words of rather congenial evil monk Martin Eric Ain. Out came Celtic Frost with their monotonic thudding hypnosis in their black and corpsepaint. They remind me of Black Sabbath and old time Metallica, sometimes with real hardcore prowess and sometimes using electronic noise to accessorize. Most notable about them, in my opinion, is the way they have the monotonic repetition kinda pummeling its way into you heartbeat style. Between the drummer’s topknot and facepaint he stank of Gene Simmons in a big way.

Type O Negative made the crowd bide its time during setup by playing some rinky dink Alley Cat/Chicken Dance kinda polka that was driving many people up the wall, definitely done on purpose for the annoyance factor.

They sucked, of course.

They opened with the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” and went into “We Hate Everyone”. ‘Profit of Doom”, “Anesthesia,” “Kill You Tonight” (on which Josh did most of the vocals) and “Christian Woman” (when Martin Eric Ain came out onstage to get Johnny and Kenny back for their Celtic Frost cameos and sing “Jesus Christ Looks Like Pete”) were on the list as well.

Peter looked like his usual cantankerous self but he was limping and sat down during some of the songs, which gave it a “band’s just jamming at home” kinda vibe, which they were, y’know. Kenny said it himself when Peter stated aloud that no matter what he said, people would cheer. “Pete! We’re home!” But Pete rarely moves onstage since I’ve been seeing him perform for the past thirteen years or so, so BFD, even though some people were complaining he seems old. The show was great.

Humorous Splices:

During “Love You To Death” Kenny was like “Sing it, Petey.” Petey was like, “Fuck you, Kenny.”

When they played “The Addams Family” between mini-sets and after the first dada da DA, people would yell “You suck” in place of the snaps.

The toilet paper up Josh’s nose.

The toilet paper that I missed Peter’s head with twice by about half a foot – but someone did get him right in the head, at least.

There was a funny mechitza made of lucite or plastic between Josh’s keyboard and Johnny’s drum set. I didn’t realize why until I saw Josh spit before he sang.

Some girl threw her bra up there and Peter rubbed it on Kenny’s head.

Peter would sometimes play his bass strap – the sound wasn’t that good. During the whole set, it was hard to hear Josh’s keyboards.

Sucks I’m not there now. Type O is onstage as I speak, and now I lost $50 on the damn tickets, but G-d has His reasons.

Here..Angry Andy has pics up too in his Myspace profile..
A big thanks to Chris Chellis of Century Media.
