September 2004 E-mail Interview With Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative

…I never posted it because the guy i did it for didn’t want it and Metal Israel wasn’t around yet. So now I dug it up, because as a Jew on Xmas…well, the day after anyway….what can I do? I did this pic of Johnny using The South Park Character Generator.

“Dead Again” album release on SPV is planned for:

March 13 – USA/CANADA, March 16 – GERMANY and March 19 – EUROPE.

MI: Working with bands/artists that are supposed evil incarnate such as Danzig and Type O Negative, how come you’re still a sweetie?! 🙂

JK: I’m a considered a nice guy probably due to the company I keep.

MI: What’s the difference between what you do for each band soundwise/skillwise?

JK: It’s definitely NOT hair color. I would say that Type O musically, is a little more complicated. There are more things going on during the song compared to Danzig which is a more guitar driven band to me. I think that they both require the same amount of skill and attention.

MI: What is the different feel you have from each one?

JK: Danzig’s music is more rock oriented.

MI: How’s the car racing going, are you getting into that on a pro level or is it still a hobby?

JK: I haven’t raced my car at all this year. It’s definitely a hobby. I was going to put the car in for some body work again while we were on tour but I’m not sure when I’m going to get to that now. I need to do head gaskets and replace the front calipers next week.

MI: How’s the family?

JK:My daughter is growing up so fast. She is constantly changing. I am constantly amazed by her.

MI: Are you ever going to come out here?!?!?!

JK: Given the current climate in the region, I would have to say that we don’t have any plans on visiting in the near future although I would love to play there at another time.

MI: What’s your top ten playlist right now?

JK:

1 Clutch – Pure Rock Fury

2 Clutch – Blast Tyrant

3 Coldplay – Live 2003

4 Aerosmith – Rocks

5 Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers

6 Beatles – Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

7 PJ Harvey – To Bring You My Love

8 Four Tops – Greatest Hits

9 The Hellacopters – Grande Rock

10 Led Zeppelin – II

MI: Systems Two is where they record most of the Hasidic/Jewish music that gets played on the radio in Israel (they RARELY play anything even resembling metal here) so because you also record there, did you ever have any experience with that kind of music and its musicians, and what do you think of that kind of music from a musician’s viewpoint?

JK: To be honest with you, I haven’t really heard too much of what goes on in the other rooms at the studio. I was aware of the fact that a lot of that music was being recorded there but I never really gave it an ear when I’m there.
