Metal Israel Exclusive Interview: NYHC Hardcore Legend Danny Diablo
Bela Nagy the Magyar king hooked this up FIERCE:
This time we chatted with Lord Ezec aka Danny Diablo, frontman of many great hardcore bands like Crown Of Thornz, Skarhead and Icepick. Now he is mainly working on the solo career, keepin’ fresh this music thing. He is considered a living legend in the NYHC scene and he always repped proudly the Jewish heritage from the streets of Queens, New York.
MI: The “Thugcore 4 Life” album came out in October. What are the main feedbacks thus far?
DD: People love the record. I have a brand new fan base and they understand what I am doing. The Hardcore/Punk kids and the SubNoize kids are the best fans in the world!!! They understand underground music. I am playing shows with Big B and DirtBall, Kotton Mouth Kings, Hed Pe and they are great people. Everyone loves the “Thugcore 4 Life” record.
MI: One of my favourites is “We Don’t Care”. How do you feel about that one?
DD: That song is hard as hell!!! Tim Armstrong (Rancid) wrote and produced that song and Zeuss (Hatebreed, Agnostic Front) also played
and mixed it. I wrote the hardest lyrics for that song. That song is a hardcore kids’ anthem.
MI: The new video “Mechanix” off the record came out really hardcore. Are you satisfied with it?
DD: I am really happy with that video. Mechanix is an ill song and I got my boys on it. Necro, Prince Power Rule and Skinhead Rob
are all my boys and it was cool to do a song with all of them. I edited that video myself for six days. Max from SubNoize directed it. I had Peter Greene, Ric Thorn and Nautica Thorne were all in the video also. Make sure you go on Youtube and check the video out!!!
MI: You always repped hard in the streets of Queens as a Puerto Rican Jew. Did you have a lot of Jewish people in your neighborhood or not so
really?
DD: I grew up in NYC and it is very mixed. I am from Jackson Heights, Queens and the funniest Jewish comedian/actor in the world comes from
my neighborhood, His name is Don Rickles!!! That alone makes me proud of being a Jew and from Jackson Heights!!! I am Jewish and proud of it!!!
All my friends growing up know that I am Jewish and respect it. I have tons of Jewish friends and tons of Catholic friends. My neighborhood was mostly Catholic and Latino but also very mixed with everything. As you know in Israel we are all Jews and it doesn’t matter if you are black, white or brown. Jew for life, my brother!!!
MI: How important is to you keep in touch with your culture and faith?
DD: I am Jewish and was brought up Jewish. I was Bar Mitzvahed and very proud of my heritage. My whole family on my grandmother’s side were
killed by Nazis. 11 of her brother and sisters were wiped off the earth because of these Nazi scumbags so I am very sensitive about it. Necro and
I always speak about this. If anyone says anything bad about Jews in our presence we will smack the shit outta them!!!
MI: The first track including all the Jewish Gangsterz MC’s, “Desperados”will be on the upcoming Riviera Regime album. Let us know the info about that joint…
DD: Just a whole bunch of Jews spitting the truth!!!
(aw I fuckin’ LOVE this – ed.)
MI: The legendary Jewish mobsters like Meyer Lansky, Arnold Rothstein, etc.. Growing up did you follow their stories? Who influenced you the most?
DD: Bugsy Siegel, Dutch Schultz and Monk Eastman are my 3 favorite hardest Jewish Gangsters. These 3 dudes were the hardest mutha fuckas in NYC
when they were alive!!! Plus they are masterminds in crime and making money…
MI: If my info is correct, Icepick, your side project with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed is about to release “Violent Epiphany” with some new remixes. Please let us know more about that…
DD: Well I got CeeKay of the Dirty Money Syndicate & The ShotBlockers on a remix with Vinny Paz of The Jedi Mind Tricks. The songs called “Show of
Force”. I also got Necro on a remix for “Tomorrow Is Not A Promise” which we just did a video for.
MI: Your other project, The Shotblockers, in a recent interview you spoke about that you are workin’ on a big deal now. Any news on that
DD: Putting a street CD out on ILL-ROC in March and will be doing a full length album out next Hanukkah!!! We are talking to Koch right now as we
speak…The ShotBlockers are a underground hip-hop/hardcore elite group. Puerto Rican Myke, G-Fella, Panic, CeeKay, Prince Metropolitan, Big Left
and D.J. Spae are all ShotBlockers!!!
MI: You are reppin’ the street wears like Pitchfork, Tribal or Joker etc. How much important is to you to represent the brands that fits with your style, music and message?
DD: I rep Pitchfork, Tribal, Joker, Methods Clothing and Blockwork which are all owned by friends of mine. The music and the clothing go hand in hand. All these clothing lines rep the hardcore lifestyle that I lead.
MI: The upcoming LP “International Hardcore Superstar”, musically, you will do more hiphop or hardcore? Or we have to expect something never heard
before?
DD: This record will be my true first solo record. All the other Danny Diablo records were all street CDs. and were produced by various producers in different studios across the U.S.A. This record has one producer(Tim Armstrong) and will be on his label HellCat Records. The music is outta this world and will put a smile on your face!!! It will be out in mid 2008 so get ready for the best record of the year in a few months!!! It has both styles on it and is hard as hell. I am bringing the streets to the stages and to everyone’s crib!!!
MI: You’re going strong in the music biz since mad years. What are the values that you consider important that help you on this way?
DD: Keep my family surrounding me at all times. D.M.S. Stay true to my fans and keep it hardcore in everything I do.
MI: How important is to you when fans say that your music and lyrics helped them through some hard periods?
DD: Keeps me going!!! When a fan approaches me and tells me that my music has helped them through hard times it puts a smile on my face and makes me believe that I am doing something positive to help someone in this cold world. I always second guess myself and it makes me feel good deep down inside if my music can uplift someone.
MI: Were you in Israel before?
DD: Yes, I have been to the Motherland. Last time was in ’96 when Tupac died cause I was in Rehovot and heard it on MTV news in Israel!!! My sister lived in Israel for years and her husband is from Israel. I will be out there soon again hopefully for vacation and hopefully I will be touring out there. I want to play Israel so bad. I have so many fans in Israel!!!
MI: What are your next future plans in music?
DD: Touring with Necro, Psycho Realm and Riviera Regime in Canada in January!!!
MI: Any last messages/thoughts to the readers of Metal Israel?
DD: Mad Jews in Metal, Punk, Hardcore and Hip Hop!!! I was the first one in N.Y.C. underground Metal, Hardcore, hip hop, Punk scene to get the Star Of David tattooed on me in 89!!! Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, Biohazard, The Dictators, Skarhead, Ramones, Kiss, Paul Simon all from N.Y.C. and have proud Jews in them!!! Jew Power 4 Life!!!
